“Prayer is not to change God, but to change us.”
— Charles Fillmore
Prayer, for many, brings to mind a moment of quiet pleading or humble supplication. But in Unity, prayer takes on a different tone—one of spiritual affirmation, conscious alignment and sacred empowerment.
Affirmative prayer is based on the understanding that the Divine is not separate from us, withholding blessings until we prove our worth. Rather, God is an ever-present energy of love, wisdom, abundance and wholeness. Prayer is not about convincing Spirit to give us something–it is about reminding ourselves of what already is.
What Makes Affirmative Prayer Different?
Affirmative prayer is grounded in spiritual principles. Instead of focusing on what’s wrong or missing, we focus on what is true at the highest level of consciousness. We speak and declare the truth that transcends appearances.
For example, rather than saying, “Please heal me,” we might affirm, “The life of God flows through every cell of my body. I am whole, radiant and strong.”
We’re not denying challenges—we’re affirming a greater Truth in the midst of them.
Ernest Holmes, founder of Centers for Spiritual Living, wrote:
“Prayer is the contemplation of the spiritual facts of life, from the highest point of view.”
When we pray affirmatively, we don’t beg—we align. We align our thoughts, emotions and beliefs with spiritual truth, and in doing so, we often experience profound shifts in consciousness, energy and outcomes.
Five Simple Steps to Affirmative Prayer
Unity’s prayer process often includes five core steps:
You Are Heard
Whether whispered or spoken boldly, every prayer lifts your consciousness and affirms your connection with God. And whether you pray for yourself, others, or the world, you become a spiritual tuning fork—vibrating with truth, healing and love.
Unity co-founder Myrtle Fillmore shared this assurance:
"The moment you pray, the healing begins."
So whatever you are walking through, turn inward. Speak Truth. Give thanks. You are not alone. Divine Love is already on the move.
